Robert Downey Jr. deserves some kind of award. He absolutely killed me. He produced about 90% of the laughs for me. I thought it was pretty weak as a satire of Hollywood and as a parody action movies, but it was very funny throughout and had some very solid action scenes. |

This is the comedy of 2008, after numerous fiascos by Ben Stiller, this movie has redeemed him.
This is what a spoof should be, paying tribute to movies like "Platoon" and "Apacolypse Now" while creating a unique voice of its own.
The movie starts off with fake trailers and a fake advertisment that tells you who these actors are, and you have seen them one way or the other, Ben Stiller plays "The Action Guy",Robert Downey Jr. plays "The Oscar Winner", and Jack Black plays "Eddie Murp...I mean the Comedy Actor". Each and every one of these actors gave a terrific and hillarious performance.
Not to mention all the celebrity cameos, this is the kind of movie where you have to find them all.
A must see that could be the American equivilant to Hot Fuzz. |

|
KA-BLAM! Finally!
Someone (Stiller) who's in the very middle of the crazy industry has crafted a scathing satire of today's demented Hollywood pretensions. It's nothing short of terrific, down the line. But by chosing a violent takedown instead of playing the subtle card, it's hard to be seriously moved by his ambitious project.
Not that Stiller and fellow screenwriter/actor Justin Theroux have trouble making their point : while a lot of other deconstructions on potentially amoral associations (for example, Thank You For Smoking or The TV Set) play out like a dart in their satire, Tropic Thunder is probably the most aggressive example of the genre I can think of. It's hysterical; it's also frighteningly close to where we're at. By the time the film opens on an absolutely BRILLIANT set of gags (which I'd rather not spoil), you know you're in very good hands.
Stiller also proves to be a remarkably competent behind the camera : the reaction shots are perfectly framed, the action is epileptic and frequently hilarious, the blood splashes exactly at the right moments, it's really a shame there lies a good 10-15 minute that could have been left in the cutting room at the very middle. Also, like in the equally tasty knee-slapper Pineapple Express, it may have a boatload of good ideas, it's still somewhat hampered by its overblown and too frequent bullet time sequences.
As for the semi-fiery controversy, it's all a big nothing : the now-dormant cries of "racism" miss the point, just as much as the recent complaints over the line "Never go full retard", a line that certain advocacy groups want to decry as biased against the mentally handicapped. I've rarely seen a controversy miss the point so much : the context for that line is a conversation between Lazarus (Downey Jr.) and Speedman (Stiller) about the latter's film "Simple Jack", in which the numerously awarded actor casually and brilliantly describes the sort of idiotic thinking behind films that portray mental retardation.
And now, to the cast : well, they pretty much all rock. Stiller is not in his best shape, but his work as a director largely compensates, Black's role is a bit underwritten but he gets the chance to chew some scenery when he turns over-the-top once he begins craving his beloved drugs, and Downey Jr., oh, Robert, how you do walk away with the movie. The hype is exactly right : he does bring an extraordinary performance. In supporting roles, Steve Coogan, Nick Nolte, Jay Baruchel, Brandon T. Jackson, Matthew McConnaughey (!) and a certain actor (who 'surprise' cameo has been spoiled all over by now) all bring a resounding crunch to their role, often drawings laughs in the most awkward situations.
For all its shortcoming, Tropic Thunder still deserves to be seen, preferably on the big screen. Its humor could not work with every viewer, but for anyone who is more than fed up with the film industry's dirtiest tricks being played again and again, it more than fits the bill in terms of satire.
And, also, it's a fucking blast. |

Tropic Thunder, what to say about this movie? If you haven’t seen it then you’ve at least heard it’s funny. However, if you’ve seen this directorial debut by Ben Stiller, who also co-wrote the screenplay, you know it’s downright hysterical. Be warned, this is not “kid friendly” material, not unless you are prepared to explain what some very laugh out loud yet incredibly graphic terms mean and also define what some very suggestive gestures and body movements are. This is certainly a movie for a more “mature” crowd, which becomes clearly evident during a memorable scene involving Jack Black’s rendition of a spoiled Hollywood actor with an obvious substance issue and in desperate need of a fix. There is a 14A rating on this film, and the box office was asking for I.D. at the door from a group of teenagers just ahead of me in line. This rating is spot on in my opinion.
The word on this movie has been that Stiller had been wanting to have it made for a number of years now and this truly comes across with clever and well thought out material; indicative of careful rewriting and polishing. For instance the opening scenes of the movie consist of faux movie trailers for the “actors” featured in the fictitious Tropic Thunder. The trailers set the tone for the type of actors working on the film; including a fantastic cameo by Toby McGuire.
Aside from the side splitting, original script, Stiller had the fortune, or money, or maybe just influence to enlist some terrific “A” list actors for this film. Doing an incredible job of method acting and pomposity is Robert Downey who plays Kirk Lazarus, a not so well veiled version of Russell Crowe. His character is an Australian actor who will go to any lengths to immerse himself in the current movie role he portrays and I might add, clearly lampoons the overbearing attitude some actors have of believing they actually become their movie characters.
In addition to his screenplay and directorial duties, Ben Stiller also plays Tugg Speedman, an action star with waning popularity looking for the role to make him a respected performer in the industry. Stiller is predictable, playing that same entertaining character that you see him in for all his movie roles, yet it still adds to the storyline and keeps you thoroughly entertained.
Also providing an outstanding and truly brilliant, over the top performance is Tom Cruise, who is virtually unrecognizable, as a megalomaniac producer who must have taken lessons in callousness from Michael Douglas’ character in Wall Street. If you have ever seen or were fascinated by Cruise’s role in Magnolia, then you will love this role! As a side note I’ve often felt that Cruise was somewhat overlooked as a contender for darker roles where he can play the villain or maybe just someone with a questionable past. As he has clearly demonstrated in movies like Magnolia and Collateral, Cruise has the capacity to tap into a truly sinister side of himself, which he can then bring to the screen in a believable and exceptionally entertaining fashion. Cruises’ rants and tirades really made the movie for me and he’s still got the dance moves to boot!
Putting in some good supporting performances were Matthew McConaughey as Ben Stiller’s agent, Nick Nolte as the writer of the book that the faux movie is based on and Jack Black as a drug addicted, highly popular comedic actor named Jeff Portnoy. Black's scenes in the jungle are the ones that left me doubled over in laughter, his best performance to date.
If you enjoy Ben Stiller you will love this movie. If you are not a Stiller fan, then you will still walk away entertained. Either way it is a sure bet for an entertaining evening at the theatre and I highly recommend it for your next evening out. |

In the ending scene of "Tropic Thunder", it is seen that the title of the film within the film had been changed to "Tropic Blunder". I wonder why it was only kept this way in the actual movie? I had quite a few expectations before I walked into "Trop...(read more) ic Thunder", and all of them were because I had a positive outlook on how the film might actually be. I slowly became disgruntled as there was only a small amount of funny material, Nick Nolte's character went through a revelation that I found completely unneccesary, Tom Cruise's character, I found, was just completely unneccesary, and so on. I just don't know what happened. The plot idea was original and funny, but there wasn't much to be said about it being funny. Matthew McConaughey had his moments in his cameo role as Speedman's agent, but as I wrote earlier about Cruise, his character was in no way, shape, or form useful. He provided probably the worst performance of 2008 so far. I am at least glad to say that I won't be considering "Tropic Thunder" as one of the worst films of 2008, but it has definitely been one of the most, if not most, dissapointing movies this year. |

This was actually a REALLY funny movie. I didn't even consider that it could be that funny but it was. The acting was actually amazing, do you know how rare tht is in a comedy? Am I talking to myself? I bet I am but I don't think I really care. Besides the acting, the writing was superb as well, I will try to put in some quotes from the movie in my conversations even though there is no natural way to put some of Downey Jr.'s speeches into action and not seem like you left your well educated mind back in another movie. Anyways, I loved it. |

Funniest flick I've seen in a while. Great mockery of so many of Hollywood/celebrity/war flick cliches we're so often bombarded with. But without the usual mind-numbingly-dull self-indulgent baggage that usually comes along when stars attempt to comment on their own industry. Much better than what I expected from the previews. Best Ben Stiller flick since the first Meet the Parents. Best Tom Cruise performance since ... 'That's right ... Ice .. Man .... I am dangerous.' |

A genre confused action comedy that delivers on some good laughs, but fails to maintain a high comedic quality throughout. It seems like there was more time spent in special effects and explosions and less on character dialogue and writing. There are alot of pointless scenes that have ambition and possibilities at start, but fail in the end to go anywhere. The highpoint of Tropic Thunder is Robert Downey Jr. I literally believed Robert Downy was a black man, and he really shined with talent and outrageousness. He really stole the film of what was left to be stolen. Overall, its a luke warm funny film thats good for a one time viewing. |

If Robert Downey Jr. was not in this, I probably would have wanted to leave. Tom Cruise got the biggest laughs, which is a sad commentary on the low expectations of American audiences. Hey it's Tom Cruise saying fuck and dancing silly to rap music! Hillllarious! Is this what we settle for now? The commentary on Hollywood shallowness is the only thing that remotely works but is usually overshadowed by the constant, gratuitous use of "fuck". I don't usually complain about that sort of thing, but when 90% of your jokes are someone just saying "fuck" or some variation ("what the fuck", "fuck this") and then running/jumping behind something, it's just fucking annoying. |

A movie that ultimately has more set-ups for jokes than actual jokes themselves. While some parts are laugh out loud hilarious, other just seem to drag; some jokes are played out a little too much. LMAO. Ben Stiller is fine, Jack Black acts like, well, Jack Black, but the reason to see this is for Robert Downey Jr and Tom Cruise. I had low expectations and never saw a movie trailer, which is probably a good thing because none of the jokes were ruined for me. The movie started out really funny, and I kept expecting it to get lame at some point, but it never did. It's extremely quotable and I can't describe any of the funny bits without ruining them for someone, but it's worth it to see Robert Downey Jr.'s monologue on how to win an Oscar. :) |

Funny premise which is great for an entertaining trailer, and a movie that drags on an hour and a half too long. Even by the poster you kinda get he gist of the movie. Sadly this is not all it has going against it... mixing comedy and action is difficult to pull off, 48hrs did it and the first two Beverly Hills Cop movies...Sadly Tropic Thunder does not. This movie gets an "A" for effort because you definitely see it but a "C-" for results.

Tropic Thunder is pretty great when it's mocking the infantile, megalomaniacal behavior of actors and the excrement that Hollywood produces. I loved loved loved the evisceration or Russel Crowe that is Robert Downey Jr's performance. But for every moment of hilarity there's an awkward lurching scene that's poorly edited or directed and leeches the humor out of it. And then there's Tom Cruise with a fake gut as a high level movie producer, screaming and hollering in vein for the sake of comedy. He's the biggest miss in the hit or miss comedy that is Tropic Thunder |

Not even close to the wonder that was Zoolander, but manages to squeeze by with an overall thumbs up. Tropic Thunder relies on shock value for its humor; something that works well sparingly, but Thunder uses it non-stop, beginning to end. Jack Black was an afterthought. The Tom Cruise character was unecessary. A self-aware, annoying element to the film used as a cheap effort to connect with the audience (is that him? yes! oh yes it's him!) It felt like he was trying so hard to say funny things, but it just never happened. Robert Downey Jr. was, of course, excellent and I never thought I would ever say this but, there wasn't enough Ben Stiller. Everything that made Zoolander so funny was absent from Tropic Thunder. This is why it will be a blockbuster hit and the majority of people will think it's funny, but real humor is what makes us other folks laugh. |

Maybe not quite as funny as i'd hoped, but still a damn good comedy.
Stiller goes balls out, offering up way more than you'd expect from the average comedy experience. Seriousy this has so much coming at you all at once in some scenes you wonder just how much of this was planned and how much just happened out of the talent on show.
Downey obviously owns the entire show as everyone guessed from day one. The lines coming out of that guy are ALL pure gold. Stiller offers up some great stuff, but i sense his act is running a bit dry now, same goes for Jack Black, but with him, script wise there's not really much to go on here for him. he's just that background crazy guy really.
Tropic thunder is a treat and may well be one of those movies i go back to a lot once i get the Blu ray. It has some truly classic moments, and some moments that just leave you wide eyed and mouth a gasp (Cruise is the obvious example, but Coogan's "moment" and the scene following wins the stand out)
As i said before, it's maybe not quite the event i wanted it to be and besides the characters this really isn't much new on the comedy front, but god damn i had fun with it and i can't wait to see it again
