Plot:
The Superman myth is well told, from his birth on the doomed planet Krypton to his childhood in a small Kansas town and beyond, in Richard Donner's blockbuster. After he comes of age, young Clark Kent...( read more

it was allright, the end was the coolest part, its have been a better movie if the picture callity was better.
So far removed from its contemporary genre brethren, this film is still loads of fun, with Reeve's Superman bringing Siegel and Shuster's creation to life. The supporting work is pretty darn outstanding too.
This is a classic 70's film, but it hasn't aged well. It's still a lot of fun though, and the music is great, so it's still worth seeing.
One of the better comic book films and this coming from somebody with a vitriolic hatred for Superman.
This movie is one of the few that holds up years later. It is an excellent adaptation that hardly changes the myth created in the comic books like other superhero movies.
The visuals are still incredible. CGI looks so fake compared to the technology of two and a half decades ago. This movie proves that the blue screen effect works much better than a computer animated version of a character like in "Spiderman" and "The Hulk".
Christopher Reeve is awesome as "Superman," but not as good as "Clark Kent". I don't remember "Clark Kent" being such a wimp as he is portrayed in this movie.
Gene Hackman is amazing as "Lex Luthor". The actor who portrays "Lex" in "Smallville" should watch Hackman's performance to see how "Superman's" archenemy should be portrayed. Hackman's performance is one you will remember for some time after seeing this movie.
Margot Kidder also does a standout performance as "Lois Lane". She is portrayed exactly as she is depicted in the comic book.
I am so happy Marlon Brando's part as "Jor-El" was just a cameo. With the way the character was depicted in the comic book, I just could not accept a legendary actor like Brando in this role. His performance was also not the best I have seen from him. To me, he seemed stiff and was reciting the lines (which he was reading off of cue cards).
This movie is just fun to watch. It's excellent for an entire family. There is little, to no violence and not any major foul words.
Compared to "Spiderman" and "Daredevil", this movie will be one of those memorable classics years from now.
As Superman was the first comic book superhero, it's only fitting that he should have had the first great comic book superhero movie.
The only Superman movie worth seeing. Christopher Reeve plays him perfectly and even though the effects aren't amazing its too well done to disregard.
Because Superman isn't powerful enough? He has to be able to turn back time too?
Such a crap ending...it was so close to being good
Richard Donner and his cadre make one of the greatest heroes of all time, Superman, into the epic masterpiece of science fiction, Superman! The amiable Chrisopher Reeve, Margot Kidder, and Gene Hackman are great. This is one of the best movies ever.
Well,i m not a Superman fan but after i watched this one,i believe that a man can fly(really).Itīs been 30 years since itīs release but Superman the movie still flies very high and not even Superman Returns can beat this classic.Christopher Reeve is the real personification of the Man of Steel. His perfomance was incredible and he stole the thunder of legends like Marlon Brando and Gene Hackman.Alongside Indiana Jones and Star Wars,Superman is a great, funny and entertaining film that will live on for many years and all of the persons in here will always remember that Christopher Reeve is Superman, not Brandon Routh.
trailblazing superhero film thought it might be, I wasn't really impressed. Clark/Superman felt substantially underdeveloped, and his status as sunny-dispositioned cure-all bothered me. Luthor's villainy was never explained and seemed more comical and forced to accomodate the story than sinister and criminal--also Hackman seemed like a poor casting choice, great though he is. overall, I felt like the filmmakers had a "we can get away with anything because it's Superman" attitude and didn't give much credence to believability. campy, over-rated, and only moderately entertaining.
Look up in the sky, it's a bird, it's a plane, it's Superman! I admire the greatest superhero in the world who is both an American and world icon. Here is the first chapter of the "Superman" film series that packs punches and is as powerful as steel.
Most people know of Superman's origins: Infant Kal-El was launched in his rocket from his doomed home planet of Krypton to Earth, where the childless Kents adopt him in Smallville. It was the sunlight that brings Superman superpowers such as x-ray vision, superstrength, and the ability to fly. And he's as fast as a speeding bullet. After he comes of age, Clark Kent (as what his parents named him) learns the truth of his real birth and builds his "Fortress of Solitude" at the Arctic. While working as a Daily Planet reporter as Clark, his Superman alter ego fights enemies as he protects the truth, justice, and the American Way. He is invulnerable to all known dangers except the deadly, green-glowing Kryptonite. The great special effects (SFX) are plenty in all the action scenes, as "Superman" is released in the wake of the rising "Star Wars" popularity. What a great superhero movie!
Adapted from the DC Comics series by Joe Shuster and Jerry Siegel and directed by Richard Donner- who would later film "Lethal Weapon" and "The Goonies"- as well as Jonathan Barry and David Tomblin, this 1978-released "Superman" film features the finest acting performances from the following cast members:
1.) Christopher Reeve (Clark Kent/Superman)
2.) Margot Kidder (Lois Lane)
3.) Jackie Cooper (Perry White)
4.) Gene Hackman (Lex Luthor)
5.) Ned Beatty (Otis)
6.) Valerie Perrine (Eve Teschmacher)
7.) Glenn Ford (Jonathan Kent)
8.) Phyllis Thaxter (Martha Kent)
9.) Marlon Brando (Jor-El)
10.) Susannah York (Lara)
Composed by John Williams, the background instrumental music is so powerful that it reflects the mythical Superman hero. The main theme is in my head now, and I can hear it!
Whether you read comic books or not, go ahead and enjoy the first chapter of the "Superman" film series, highly recommended for all audiences.
What can I say? A favourite of mine no doubt as it is for many more. I had a crush on Margot Kidder for ages.
There have been a million shows about Superman. TV, Radio, Cartoons. But nothing will ever top this movie. This is very well done, concidering the effects of the time it can't be topped. Beside, Reeve and Hackman play their rolls perfectly.
Superman? The only good superhero movies before the millenium with the exeption of batman. Great family fun (although if your under 18 the fact that you dont know who Christopher Reeve is, and the effects arent done by dreamworks or some other CGI company)
The best classic superhero film with a great balance of comedy, wonder, and romance. The second film got really carried away with the humor while this one only had it about half way when Lex shows up, before that is the great intro with the superb score and still pretty decent visual effects chronicling the early years of Kal-El.
No matter what anyone says, this is the original gangsta of superheroes. So it is only fitting that the last son of Krypton's big-budget movie debut should turn out to be the one that all others must be measured by. And while I know that this movie does have it's dated flaws, it was, just like the character whom it portrayed, the one that started on the idea of how epic the concept of a superhero could truly be.
For a movie made in the 70's the effects are pretty good!! This movie is a little catchy but still interesting!!
love those movies it's just to bad that christopher reeve & marlon brando are both dead now cus they we both very good actor's
Pretty thorough telling of the story. Good effects for the time. It runs a little long, but well put together.
Truly one of the best super hero origin movies ever. They need to take more time to do it like this again these days.
Best adaptation of the comic strip..this Superman flies with alot of fun and action...Reeve plays the character to a S, and supporting cast is solid. Big budget, campy fun..and eccentric Brando hams it up..Hackman and Perrine hsve juicy roles and play them to the hilt..an entertaining blockbuster that withstands the test of time
Simply the best comic book film adaptation of all time! The late Christopher Reeve made most if not all boys of my generation believe that a man could truly fly.
This one was very good, and told the story pretty well, although I thought they could have done better casting Lois Lane.

This movie is just fantastic! I have seen it so many times and it still makes me swoon ! Christopher Reeve is the best Superman ever! This movie is a must see because if you want the essence of Superman than you should watch this. LOVE IT !
As great as I thought Routh was and as much of a fan as I am of him, I still feel that Christopher Reeve did an utterly brilliant role here that takes the whole cake and eats it too. If you thought Superman Returns was good, you really need to check this film out, it is probably better.
