this is a movie which started the Star Wars saga and it has everything you want from a
fantasy sci fi movie and it comes under the direction of George Lucas.
For the first time I've engaged myself in this movie - hated and loved by millions. I like science fiction, and I like epics... And this was really a decent movie. Its hidden complexity opens doors to a lot of other movies. This movie itself was quite simple and straight-forward, and although I enjoyed watching it, I don't understand what the fuss is about.
One of the greatest movies of all time! The new trilogy is a joke, and is shit compared to the original. I mean everything is prefect in this movie- the story, music, setting, acting, characters.... It is, and will always remain a classic. One thing I don't understand is, how did Alec Guinness not win the Oscar?
?A long time ago in a galaxy far, far away?? Do you remember the first time those words appeared across the screen? I wish I could. Star Wars is like The Wizard of Oz for me, in that, I have seen it more times than I can count but I cannot remember the first time I saw it. It has always been, and always shall be. I know this characters as well as I know my dearest friends and family members. Yoda, Chewbacca, Han Solo and Darth Vader remain my favorites. Yes, in that exact order. Granted, Yoda doesn?t appear in the first one, but I?m taking about the franchise in masse, because, really, Star Wars is actually one six-hour long film. Some sections are much better than others.
Amazing, the kind of effects that were able to be done in 1977. I loved the battle to destroy the Death Star. I got seriously into how badass it looked.
I would be willing to bet no one who saw this movie when it first came out will ever forget that whoppin big space ship flying over their heads as they sat in the theater. It was one of those Defining Moments in Cinema.
The combination of ILMs groundbreaking special effects combined with a down to earth, simple, Quest Plot and fresh, young talent made this an undeniable Milestone Movie. There's Before Star Wars and After Star Wars. LOL
I only vaguely remember bits and pieces of this. I think I liked it well enough. I always fall sleep at the end.
Easily one of the best... Geez it is just a mind blowing turn of the century film! How did George Lucas do it? The world may never know!
The start of a remarkable journey through space and time! I truly enjoyed this original film with its vastly different characters.
"Princess Leia" (Carrie Fisher) is in possession of the plans of the "Empire's" ultimate weapon, and is on her way to the secret "Rebel" base to deliver the plans for study when the ship that is transporting her is attacked and boarded by "Imperial" forces lead by "Darth Vader" (David Prowse, voiced by James Earl Jones). The princess is captured, only after putting the plans inside the "droid" "Artoo-Detoo (R2-D2)" (Kenny Baker), which is accompanied by the "protocol droid" "See Threepio (C3-PO)" (Anthony Daniels).
The two "droids" escape to the nearby planet "Tatoonie," and into the care of the "Luke Skywalker" (Mark Hamill), an orphan who is being taken care of his uncle "Owen Lars" (Phil Brown) and his wife "Beru" (Shelagh Fraser), who have been taken care of their nephew since he was very young. What "Skywalker" isn't aware of is "Artoo" is searching for who it claims is his former owner "Obi-Wan Kenobi" (Alec Guiness), and that the "droid" has a recorded message from the princess asking for his help.
After meeting up with the man he knows as "Ben Kenobi," the two, along with the two droids, discover the "Jawa" transport which sold "Luke and his uncle the "droids" attacked, with all hands killed "Kenobi" instantly recognizes the attack pattern of the "Imperial Stormtroopers" and "Skywalker" rushes back home after realizing that the "Stormtroopers" may have learned who the "droids" were sold to, only to find his home destroyed and his uncle and aunt killed.
Sometime later, The foursome buy passage on a spaceship piloted by the smuggler "Han Solo" (Harrison Ford) and his first mate "Chewbacca" (Peter Mayhew) to bring the plans to the Princess, whom they discover has been captured and ad-lib a plan to free her.
This movie is simply amazing, with good special effects, which haven't aged well in 30 years for the most part, great makeup effects and good character development. There is very little wrong with it.
The special effects, for the most part, hasn't held up that well. The space scenes are still real good, especially when there is a battle. Other special effects don't work thanks to budget constraints.
The wardrobes are really good, with exception of a few outfits. Many of the outfits look really cheap though, made with cheap materials.
The score, which was written by John Williams, has some of the most memorable tunes in motion picture history. The music really helps set the mood for many scenes and characters.
With very few exceptions, the performances are really good. A good number of the performers will be remembered for their roles in this film when they are gone. Other performances are weak thanks to some poorly written lines given to them to say.
Despite the dated special effects, and other minor problems, "Star Wars" is still one of the greatest science-fiction movies of all-time.
The flight between Obi-Wan Kenobi and Darth Vader could probably have been a little better or longer and although I have always found the ending to be a bit boring I liked this moive. It was good.
The best science fiction film ever made...has all the elements of classic storytelling plus something for everyone. My favorite of the six Star Wars series.
The original and best! We'd never seen anything on the screen like it. Saw it twice opening day at the Chinese Theater in Los Angeles and it wowwed me both times!
i still think that THX-1138 is Lucas' masterpiece, however this is a pretty enjoyable film. my only real complaint here is c3po's constant nagging/whining.
After rewatching it, I must say this is one of the greatest movies of the 70's, and of all time! One of the most influential from beginning to end, with a chilling climax that keeps you attached to your seat.
classic. I grew up watching these with my dad... this isn't my favorite in the trilogy( hello how can u beat the ewoks and Jar jar binx?) but u have to watch it to get the entire star wars experience. :)
Here we go, the beginning of one of the greatest trilogies in cinema history. Wonderful and involving characters dropped into a fantastic situation that Lucas makes seem like a universe unto itself. Though I'm not much of a LOTRs fan and I'm seldom impressed when creators "make an entire universe" in their stories, what Lucas creates is phenomenal. With so many memorable characters and such an involving story it is no wonder so many folks got hooked on this franchise like heroin... only better.
One-Sentence Review:
"A Movie that will echo through the ages for it's greatness, the one that started it all"
waaaay ahead of its time, this movie STILL kicks ass. i love the classic sets and costuming, not like today where its effed up and everything is done by computer =/
One of my favorites of the Star Wars movies because Luke seems more down-to-earth and not so fake like in the other two. Plus, the story's good after you've seen Episodes I-III
Classic. I mean, everybody has seen this film, it's the beginning of the series and probably the best one.
One of the best sci-fi movies of all time and the second best in the series. I usually find science fiction movie my least favorite genre, but this one is an exception. Really, do I have to explain this movie? I think everyone has seen it by now. If you have not, shame on you.

10 years ago my dad took me to the cinema to see the special edition release and my mind was officially warped, 30 years ago my grandpa took my dad to see the same film and the same happened. Truly and utterly timeless!! Happy 30th Birthday Star Wars.
